ARTRISE COLLECTIVE PUBLIC ART INTERVENTION: Art from the first 90 days of the revolution for freedom in Iran was projected onto the façade of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco nightly between January 26th - January 28th, 2023. Inspired by a women-led revolution in Iran, artists have been creating paintings, drawings, posters, digital art, animation, videos, and short films around the theme of WOMAN LIFE FREEDOM.
In collaboration with Mozaik Philanthropy, through a global open call, a powerfully resonant selection of artworks made within Iran and across its borders was curated through a blind review process. Some additional artworks were commissioned to reflect the diversity of the movement. Given that many of the exhibited artists reside in Iran, in consideration of the significant risks involved for those who support the protest movement, all of the artworks are shown anonymously. The event is dedicated to all who have and continue to risk their lives for freedom.
The WOMAN.LIFE.FREEDOM is a virtual exhibition gallery that features over 50 contemporary artworks from artists from Iran and beyond, and it is dedicated to their bravery. All artworks are shown anonymously for security purposes and in solidarity with all those who have and continue to risk their lives for freedom.
Women and men throughout Iran and people worldwide rose to protest the tragic death of 22-year-old Jina Mahsa Amini, a woman who died in police custody after reportedly being beaten by the Iranian morality police on September 16, 2022. Now, months later, tens of thousands of people have been imprisoned in Iran by the Islamic Republic, and hundreds of others have lost their lives in this escalating humanitarian crisis. Artists, writers, journalists, educators, labor activists, political dissidents, and even children have demanded freedom in their lives.
The movement’s slogan, “Zan, Zendegi, Azadi,” which translates to “Woman, Life, Freedom,” originated in Iran’s Kurdish region and has reverberated around the globe over the past months, marking a renaissance for women’s rights, emblematic of the fight for human freedom, everywhere.
